Ceramic Anilox Rollers — Why It Matters

The anilox roller is the component that determines print quality in a flexographic machine. It transfers ink from the ink chamber to the printing plate at precise, consistent volumes — and the quality of that transfer determines everything: color accuracy, dot sharpness, consistency across a long production run.

There are two types of anilox rollers in the market. Chrome anilox rollers — the older, cheaper standard — are chrome-plated steel with mechanically embossed ink cells. They wear faster, transfer ink less consistently at high speeds, attract ink residue that requires intensive cleaning, and produce lower print resolution. They are adequate for short runs and basic applications.

Ceramic anilox rollers — the current industry standard for quality flexographic printing — are laser-engraved with microscopic hexagonal ink cells on a ceramic-coated surface. The ceramic layer is significantly harder than chrome, meaning the cell geometry holds its precision over long production runs. Web video inspection: An inline video inspection system monitors the print quality in real time as the machine runs. The operator can identify print defects, registration drift, or ink inconsistency at higher speeds — catching problems before they become production waste.

Bow rollers and web control: Bow rollers spread the paper web before printing, eliminating wrinkles and ensuring the tissue enters the print section flat. Inconsistent web tension causes print defects that no amount of color calibration can correct.

Machine structure: Heavy machine frame, balanced rollers, Japanese bearings — FYH and Nachi — throughout. The same component specification that defines Birla's standard napkin machines applies here. Embossing units: Configurable as per customer requirement — single emboss, or double emboss unit depending on the product specifications and target market.

Calendaring unit: A calendaring unit smooths and compresses the tissue before printing, improving the print surface and ink adhesion. Tissue with inconsistent surface texture produces inconsistent print — the calendaring unit eliminates the variable.

The Multi-Head Configuration

The 6 Color machine is available in a multi-head configuration — a single machine body with interchangeable folding heads and stereo plate rollers, allowing the operator to produce two different napkin sizes from the same machine.

The most common configurations: 32cm and 40cm, 33cm and 40cm, or 32cm and 38cm — though any combination within the machine's working width range is possible.
